Stress &Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of unease about something with an uncertain outcome. It’s an emotion which causes inner turmoil leading to worry, or apprehension which could precipitate into fearfulness, agitation, tension and stress. If observed carefully, it’s the fear of unknown or fear of future which causes suspense and nervousness. If Stress and Anxiety is within limits, it enhances our performance, but, beyond certain limit, they are detrimental to our day to day functioning, leading to health issues. There are conditions which are very common to us and can be treated easily.

 

Some of the  problems caused by Physiological and Physical Disturbances affect our choices and behaviours.

Some of the Physiological and Physical disturbances of our body affect our choices and behaviour which precipitate in form of certain conditions. Such conditions can effect our normal functioning and can lead to some health problems. Some of the symptoms you may observe are:

i)  Avoiding eating, restricting some foods or being selective about food which leads to insufficient intake of food. This may lead to failure to get nourishment, insufficient energy intake causing significant weight loss and undernourishment. Due to health loss, day to day functioning , personal and professional life may suffer. This may lead to Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, or Eating disorders like Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia nervosa.

ii) Sleep related problems which are happening often, 2-3 times a week and causing problems in maintaining normal daily routine/schedules. There comes a time when the problem starts affecting personal and professional life. Such conditions are treatable and the person can resume normal daily schedule. Some of the sleep disorders are:-  insomnia, hypersomnia, disorder of the sleep-wake schedule, Sleepwalking, Sleep terrors [night terrors], Nightmares.

iii) Sexual dysfunction - Lack or loss of sexual desire, Sexual aversion and lack of sexual enjoyment, Failure of genital response, Orgasmic dysfunction, Premature ejaculation, Nonorganic vaginismus, Nonorganic dyspareunia, Excessive sexual drive, Other sexual dysfunction.

iv) Puerperium or Postpartum disorder – A six weeks sensitive period post delivery which may cause some imbalance in the females.


 

Childhood and Adolescence problems - Behavioural and Emotional

These conditions are specific to childhood or adolescence as the problem starts either at an early developmental age or during teenage. These problems start as emotional problems which effect the behaviour of the child or adolescent. Please pay attention to complaints from the school teachers regarding your child's behaviour.

Some of the problems associated with difficulty in language, spellings or mathematics can be treated with correct intervention.

There are increasing cases of childhood anxiety, depression and emotional problems. A child is unable to tell about his/her problems but as parents we have to keep a close watch so that the problem doesn't increase.

Delirium and Dementia

Delirium is a condition where the consciousness and attention is disturbed, and there is effect on thinking, memory, emotion, psycho-motor behaviour, and the sleep-wake cycle.

Dementia is a condition which is either chronic or progressive and causes disturbance in memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgement. Impairments of cognitive function are commonly accompanied, and occasionally preceded, by deterioration in emotional control, social behaviour, or motivation. Dementia interference with personal activities of daily living, such as washing, dressing, eating, personal hygiene, excretory and toilet activities.

 

 

Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental problems

 

There are certain conditions where a child shows delayed developmental milestones. Most of the times these children are misdiagnosed as Intellectually disabled or having Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Such wrong diagnosis causes huge emotional and psychological turmoil to the parents as well as unnecessarily puts a label on the child. In most of the cases the symptoms are curable and get better with time. Most of these conditions are very age specific and present itself with that particular age. Some of the conditions are listed below:

i) Developmental Disorders of Speech and Language, Specific developmental disorders of scholastic skills like Specific reading disorder, Specific spelling disorder, Specific disorder of arithmetical skills,

ii) Pervasive developmental disorders like Childhood autism, Atypical autism, Rett's syndrome, Other childhood disintegrative disorder, disorders associated with mental retardation and stereotyped movements, Asperger's syndrome.

Mood Spectrum and
Emotional Dysregulation

 

We experience various emotions in our day to day happenings and experiences, which may vary from being happy, sad, disillusioned, perturbed, angry or upset. If these emotions prevail for a longer duration, they are known as mood. These feelings and emotions are part of a normal life and each one of us encounters them, but when these moods , feelings and emotions start interfering with our day to day functioning, impact our decisions, our personal, professional and social life, one has to find a way to deal with them. It's very important to seek help at the right time as severity of the symptoms is less, then recovery is faster and one can keep leading a normal life, whereas, the more severe the symptoms, the more prolonged treatment

Emotional Dysregulation generally refers to a condition in which the person’s emotional response is poorly modulated and does not fall within the conventionally accepted range of emotive response which may also be referred to as labile mood, marked fluctuation of mood or mood swings. It can be a temper outbreak, Anger issues or unable to manage emotions like sudden outburst or crying spells.

Psychotic and Delusional Disorders

Psychosis is a condition where the sufferer loses touch with reality and see, hear, or believe things that aren’t real. There are often warning signs leading up to psychosis. One may start to act differently. One's work or school performance could start to slip. One might also isolate oneself from others. A person with this condition can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not. Also, the speech might be unclear and behavior disorganized.
