Mood Disorders and Emotional Dysregulation

Frequent changes in mood that prevail for longer duration and interfere with everyday life may indicate a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder. Mood disorders are treatable conditions. With appropriate diagnosis, treatment, and support, most people struggling with mood disorders do get better.

If you have concerns about mood or behavior changes in yourself or someone you know, it’s important that you gain an understanding of how to recognize mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder, and how to get appropriate diagnosis and treatment for them.

Some of the symptoms of mood disorder are :

  • Sad / depressed mood
  • Not finding pleasure in activities which you liked earlier
  • Feeling tired and being less active
  • Decrease in concentration and attention
  • Low self confidence
  • Started having guilt and worthlessness
  • Disturbed sleep pattern
  • Loss of appetite
  • You feel helpless.
  • You loose hope in future and self.

OR

  • Sudden increase in energy or activity
  • Sudden increased pressure of speech
  • Feel decreased need for sleep
  • Unable to sustain attention
  • Over optimistic ideas or grandiose
  • Spending money without thinking

 

Some of the conditions within Mood disorder are:

Depression, Mania, Bipolar affective disorder, Persistent and Recurrent mood [affective] disorders,


Emotional Dysregulation

Difficulty or inability in coping with the experience or in processing emotions leads to Emotional Dysregulation. Some people are unable to manage their anger or emotional outburst. Even small incidents or interactions can trigger explosive reactions and uncontrolled emotions. Such people get overwhelmed as they are unable to process information correctly and misinterpret communications. This may lead to voilent or abusive behaviour causing hurt and harm into relations and social circle.

It should be considered as a psychological condition which is possible to treat with scientific therapies. The person learns to manage his/her emotions well making him fully functional and well adjusted in personal and social life.
